The Battle of Aračinovo (June 21–25, 2001)
The Battle of Aračinovo remains one of the most dramatic and significant events of the 2001 security conflict in the Republic of Macedonia. Between June 21 and June 25, 2001, members of the Army of the Republic of Macedonia and the Ministry of Internal Affairs carried out a large-scale military and police operation aimed at reestablishing state control over the village of Aračinovo, which at the time was under the control of armed members of the National Liberation Army UCK
The operation began with coordinated actions on multiple fronts, supported by artillery and armored units. The Macedonian security forces advanced under extremely challenging combat conditions, facing strong armed resistance and well-fortified positions. Despite the dangers and intense fighting, they demonstrated a high level of professionalism, discipline, and dedication, fulfilling their constitutional duty to protect the country’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and security.
In the final phase of the operation, amid intensive diplomatic efforts and strong international pressure, the withdrawal of the armed members of the National Liberation Army (NLA) from Aračinovo was organized. This development sparked strong reactions among the Macedonian public and has remained the subject of numerous political, military, and historical analyses and debates.
Today, the Battle of Aračinovo is remembered as a symbol of the courage, sacrifice, and dignity of the Macedonian defenders who stood in defense of the country and its constitutional order. It remains a significant chapter in modern Macedonian history and a lasting reminder of the sacrifices made by the members of the security forces in defending the Republic of Macedonia.
