The new interpretation of the timeless song “Zemjo moja”, performed by Doris Di, represents a carefully crafted musical project that connects the past and the present, nostalgia and contemporary expression, as well as the homeland and the diaspora.
It is a reinterpretation of the legendary “Zemjo moja”, a composition performed in 1975 by Ismeta Krvavac and the group “Ambasadori” at the then highly popular festival “Vašiot šlager na sezonata”. The music was composed by one of the most significant singer-songwriters in the region, Kemal Monteno, a name that left a deep mark on the musical history of the Balkans.
In the Macedonian version, the lyrics were written by Ognen Nedelkovski, who, with sensitivity and respect for the original, managed to create a text that sounds authentic, close, and deeply emotional for the Macedonian audience. The arrangement was handled by Nikolche Micevski, who gave it a contemporary sound dimension while preserving the song’s recognizable soul.
The story behind this reinterpretation carries a special weight and sincerity. The idea originated from Doris’s father, who proposed it as a potential project two years ago. At that time, as she herself recalls, the song felt like a beautiful but almost unattainable challenge, especially considering it is a work by the legendary Kemal Monteno. Following his passing in 2015, the copyright was transferred to his family, who live outside the country’s borders.
However, as often happens with sincere ideas, circumstances aligned at just the right moment. During a conversation between her father and lyricist Ognen Nedelkovski, the discussion naturally turned to reinterpretations of older songs. It was then that Nedelkovski revealed he had already written lyrics for “Zemjo moja” several years earlier. That moment marked a turning point and the beginning of transforming a long-held idea into reality.
“‘They say that when something is sincerely wished for, the Universe finds a way and God paves the path,’ says Doris, describing the process that turned an idea into a musical reality.”
But today, this song carries an even deeper symbolism. Although created and performed in the Republic of Macedonia, its message resonates strongly among the Macedonian diaspora around the world—from the United States, Canada, and Australia to major European cities. For those living far from their homeland, “Zemjo moja” is not just a song; it is an emotion, a memory, and a bond that does not fade.
That is why Doris Di’s new version comes as a bridge between generations and geographical distances. It reminds Macedonians, wherever they may be, of their roots, their language, and their sense of belonging to the Republic of Macedonia.
